Engines

The B-17 was powered by four 1,200hp Wright R-1820 engines. When 746 struck the ridge the engines, being the single heaviest parts of the airframe, were torn from their mounts and tumbled down the valley. All four engines remain at the site, roughly arranged in pairs. The engines were numbered from 1-4, starting with the outboard left engine. Engines 3 and 4 are generally the first pieces of wreckage that hikers come across, while the other two are located on the far side of the debris field. All of the engines are fairly complete, but are in generally poor condition, having suffered damage from tumbling down the valley, as well as being the subject of many attempts at removal by souvenir hunters. All four are missing their gearboxes and propellers, though these parts may lie further uphill in the upper debris field.
